What is the VA Automobile Allowance?

A one-time grant to help veterans with service-connected disabilities purchase an adaptive vehicle.

The VA Automobile Allowance (also called the VA Automobile Adaptive Equipment Grant) is a one-time payment of up to $25,546 in 2025 for eligible veterans. This grant can be applied toward the purchase of a new or used wheelchair accessible van.

This is NOT a loan. You never have to pay it back. The VA pays the grant directly to Rollx Vans when you purchase your wheelchair van, reducing your out-of-pocket cost by up to $25,546.

The grant amount is adjusted annually for inflation. In recent years:

  • 2025: $25,546
  • 2024: $24,459
  • 2023: $22,797
  • 2022: $21,488

Veterans can use this grant toward any wheelchair accessible vehicle, including minivan conversions (Honda, Toyota, Chrysler) or full-size vans (RAM ProMaster, Ford Transit).

Who Qualifies for the VA Automobile Grant?

You may be eligible if you have a service-connected disability in one of these categories.

Loss of Use of One or Both Feet

If you have a service-connected disability that results in the loss — or permanent loss of use — of one or both feet, you qualify for the full VA automobile grant.

Loss of Use of One or Both Hands

Service-connected disabilities resulting in the loss — or permanent loss of use — of one or both hands also qualify you for the VA automobile allowance.

Permanent Vision Impairment

Veterans with permanent impairment of vision in both eyes to a certain degree (specified by the VA) may qualify for the automobile grant.

Severe Burns or ALS

Veterans with severe burn injuries or a diagnosis of ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis / Lou Gehrig’s Disease) may also be eligible for the full grant.

Ankylosis of One or Both Knees/Hips

Service-connected ankylosis (joint stiffness or fusion) of one or both knees or hips may qualify you for the VA automobile benefit.

How the VA Grant Process Works

We make it simple — here’s what to expect.

3. We Submit Your VA ApplicationRollx Vans completes and submits VA Form 21-4502 (Application for Automobile or Other Conveyance and Adaptive Equipment) on your behalf. We handle all the paperwork.

4. VA Reviews and ApprovesThe VA processes your application — typically taking 30-90 days. Once approved, you’ll receive a letter confirming your grant amount and eligibility.

5. Select Your Wheelchair VanBrowse our new and used wheelchair accessible van inventory. Your VA grant can be applied toward any vehicle — minivan or full-size conversion.

6. VA Pays Rollx Vans DirectlyWhen you purchase your wheelchair van, the VA pays us directly. The grant amount (up to $25,546) is deducted from your purchase price. You never see or handle the grant money.

7. Take Delivery of Your VanWe deliver your wheelchair accessible van anywhere in the United States. You receive full training on operation, and your VA grant is applied — reducing your cost by up to $25,546.

Can I Combine the VA Grant with Financing?

Yes — and most veterans do. The VA automobile grant covers a significant portion of your wheelchair van cost, but most veterans still need financing for the remaining balance.

Here’s a real example:

  • Wheelchair Van Price: $55,000

  • VA Grant (2025): − $25,546

  • Trade-In Value: − $8,000

  • Amount to Finance: $21,454

By combining your VA grant with financing and potentially a trade-in, you can reduce your monthly payment to a manageable amount. Many veterans finance as little as $10,000-$20,000 after their grant is applied.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is the VA automobile grant in 2025?

The VA Automobile Allowance is $25,546 in 2025. This amount is adjusted annually for inflation. The grant can be applied toward the purchase of a new or used wheelchair accessible van.

Do I have to pay the VA grant back?

No. The VA automobile grant is not a loan — you never have to pay it back. It’s a one-time benefit paid directly to the dealership (Rollx Vans) when you purchase your wheelchair van. The grant amount is deducted from your purchase price.

How do I know if I’m eligible for the VA automobile grant?

You may qualify if you have a service-connected disability resulting in loss or permanent loss of use of one or both feet, loss or permanent loss of use of one or both hands, permanent vision impairment in both eyes, severe burn injuries, ALS, or ankylosis of the knee or hip. Contact Rollx Vans for a free eligibility review — we’ll help you determine if you qualify.

What documents do I need to apply for the VA automobile grant?

You’ll need your DD-214 (discharge papers) and documentation of your service-connected disability rating from the VA. Rollx Vans will guide you through gathering these documents and will complete VA Form 21-4502 on your behalf.

How long does the VA grant approval process take?

The VA typically processes automobile grant applications within 30-90 days. Processing times can vary depending on the complexity of your case and the VA’s current workload. Rollx Vans submits your application and follows up with the VA to keep the process moving.

Can I use the VA grant more than once?

No. The VA automobile grant is a one-time benefit. However, if you’re eligible for adaptive equipment (hand controls, wheelchair lifts, etc.), you may qualify for additional VA Adaptive Equipment grants, which can be used multiple times.

Can I use my VA grant on a used wheelchair van?

Yes. The VA automobile grant can be applied toward any wheelchair accessible vehicle — new or used. Many veterans choose certified pre-owned or used wheelchair vans to maximize the value of their grant.

What if my VA grant doesn’t cover the full cost of the wheelchair van?

Most veterans combine their VA grant with financing, a trade-in vehicle, or both. For example: if your wheelchair van costs $55,000 and you receive the full $25,546 grant, you would finance or pay the remaining $29,454. Rollx Vans offers financing options for all credit situations.

Do I need to be 100% disabled to get the VA automobile grant?

No. Your overall disability rating percentage does not determine eligibility for the VA automobile grant. You must have a service-connected disability in one of the qualifying categories (loss of use of limbs, vision impairment, etc.), regardless of your total disability percentage.

Will the VA pay Rollx Vans directly, or do I receive the grant money?

The VA pays Rollx Vans directly. You never receive the grant money yourself. When you purchase your wheelchair van, the VA issues payment to us, and we deduct the grant amount from your purchase price. This ensures the funds are used for their intended purpose.

Can I combine my VA automobile grant with other funding programs?

Yes. Many veterans combine their VA grant with state vocational rehab programs, Medicaid waivers, workers’ compensation benefits, or nonprofit assistance. Rollx Vans can help you navigate multiple funding sources to reduce your out-of-pocket cost even further.

Does Rollx Vans charge a fee to help with the VA grant paperwork?

No. Helping you apply for and secure your VA automobile grant is part of our service to veterans — there is no additional fee. We handle all paperwork and communication with the VA at no cost to you.
