You may have already heard about the group that’s looking to make Itasca County a showcase for accessibility in Minnesota. If not, they’re the same group that put together the Myrna-Lee Mania world-record breaking event in May of 2015 that brought together 300 people to roll their wheelchairs at one time, in one location and earn a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records. Does this ring a bell?
Just in case it doesn’t and you haven’t heard of them before, this is the Mobility Mania group based out of the Grand Rapids area.
The Myrna-Lee Mania World Record
The group’s world record attempt last spring sought to bring awareness to the number of people in Northern Minnesota in wheelchairs. But, the event brought to light so much more than that. It brought awareness to the lack of accessibility within the community and also the isolation that inaccessibility was creating.
Additionally, it sparked a need for change within the communities of Northern Minnesota. A change towards accessibility.
Changes to the Grand Rapids Area
Since the event last May, Mobility Mania and the Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation have worked hand-in-hand to establish themselves as a more accessible community. They’ve worked to improve access to trails and recreational opportunities, support building and equipment updates, and reduce obstacles like expensive wheelchair van taxi services in their area.
Making an Accessibility Statement
Mobility Mania is working to make a difference in their community beyond setting records, and instead is looking to make a statement. Another way they’re doing this is through continued events that bring people of all abilities together. Their first will be a dance.
Next month, on April 16, 2016, Mobility Mania will be hosting a dance for people of all abilities. The dance will be held at Timberlake Lodge in Grand Rapids from 4p.m. to 1a.m. The occasion will set out to encourage all individuals to get out on the dance floor, whether they’re standing or using a wheelchair.
