Design Your Own Wheelchair with This Tech Startup

Buying a new wheelchair can be a lengthy process that involves dealers, doctors and a whole lot of paperwork. It’s a necessary process to go through, but it’s often not the most enjoyable experience. Even after you make the purchase, you never really know exactly what you are going to get until you sit in the wheelchair for the first time.

With all the technology that is available today, one would think that there is a better way to go about the whole process. After all, we can virtually customize anything that we buy.

At Rollx Vans, we take extra care to put a lot of customization into the wheelchair van conversions we create for our customers, so why can’t you do the same with your next wheelchair?

That’s precisely what the IntelliWheels founders Marissa Siebel and Scott Daigle set out to answer.

A New Way to Build a Wheelchair

The Chicago-based wheelchair tech startup, which got its start from the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign’s Cozad New Venture Challenge in 2010, has rolled out a new project for their customers known as Project Tinkler.

The service allows wheelchair users to design and create their own customized wheelchair using an online tool, according to ChicagoInno. Just as you would build a car using a dealer’s online website, Project Tinkler enables you to customize your wheelchair frame’s style, size, material type, paint color and much more.

Using the tool, you can completely design your own wheelchair from the ground up.

Once you have your plans completed, you can send them via the online platform to a dealer or manufacturer, who will go to work building your wheelchair to your exact specifications. Currently, IntelliWheels is partnering with the Swedish manufacturer, TiArrow and the US manufacturer, Perf4max to help them build the new chairs for their customers.

IntelliWheels is working with their manufacturing partners to create both custom and standard platforms, where users can either build their own chair from scratch or order any necessary parts that they may need. They hope that the program will make ordering more easy for customers and more efficient for manufacturers.

It’s a system that could completely change the way that you order your next wheelchair.
